Some aggrieved inmates of the prison on May 28 set part of the prison ablaze during a riot, while two inmates escaped.
Governor Nasiru El-Rufa'i of Kaduna State, said on Saturday June 13,that the state government will rehabilitate the Zaria Prison at a cost of N24 million.
He stated this in Zaria during inspection visit. The Governor said the amount will be used in rehabilitating the affected areas. And advised the Nigerian prison service to contact Kaduna State Ministry of works, on how to go about the project.
The governor promised to pay similar visit to other prisons across the state as well as State Ministries
Responding. the Comptroller of prisons in Kaduna state , Alhaji Abubakar Garba,appreciated the governor for what he called humanitarian intervention.
He observed that the renovation, if completed will give the prison a new look, apart from improving its level of security
NAN, also reports that El-Rufa's visited Zaria Water Project to ascertain level of completion.
