Am very sure it started gradually
It baffles me to see some dark and ebony skinned persons say I want to whiten my skin. Even after explaining to them the consequences of their desire majority will say "I don't care I just want to yellow"  in their own language.
Honestly the end result of such actions is always regrettable, there is absolutely nothing wrong  in lightening your skin as a dark person but not to the extreme.
It's good to do skin color enhancement and it's also good to know the length you can go so you don't damage your skin
Damage done to your skin in one month sometimes can take several months  if not a year to fix.
Have you noticed that anytime you expose some part of your skin in the sun there is always color discoloration which can take several weeks or months to fix depending on the level of  sun exposure.
